Preventing slips, trips and falls!

Slips, trips and falls were the second leading cause of nonfatal occupational injuries or illnesses involving days away from work in 2013, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. OSHA’s Walking-Working Surfaces Standard states that all workplaces should be “kept clean and orderly and in a sanitary condition.” The rule includes passageways, storerooms and service rooms. Floors should be clean and dry. Drainage should be present where “wet processes are used.” If you don’t use the right king of cleaning protocols for things like oils and grease, you’ll just spread slipperiness around rather than getting it up and off the floor. Here are a few tips to prevent slips, trips and falls:

1.Report and clean up spills and leaks

2.Keep aisles and exits clear of items

3.Consider installing warning signs to help with blind spots.

4.Replace worn, ripped or damaged flooring.

Cavinti, Laguna 2017

Before 2017 started, I promised myself to travel more and explore as many places as I can. Being broke after Christmas and New Year celebrations, I had to find a nearby travel so expenses would be less.

And then I found Cavinti, Laguna.

Laguna is accessible from GMA, Cavite (where I currently live) and quite near as well. I left as early as 8AM to start my journey.

  • Ride transportation going Sta. Cruz, Laguna – from South Station, Alabang there are vans going Sta. Cruz Laguna. Since January 2017, fare is P100. There are also buses, but I chose van instead. Travel time is around 2 hours.

Japanese Garden

  • My first stop was Japanese Garden. Tell the driver to drop you off anywhere in Sta. Cruz where you can ride jeep going to Sta. Cruz Market. Fare is P8.
  • At the market, look for the jeepney that will take you to Cavinti, Laguna. Fare is P22
  • Go and enjoy the scenery before alighting Japanese Garden.
  • At the entrance, there’s a P20 fee. After that, you can enjoy the five-hectare garden.

These were few of the things you’ll see upon entering the garden.

If you are a big fan of Japanese culture or anything related to Japan, don’t get your hopes up. The place is not really Japanese-ish. I think the only objects, which showed the Japanese-y of the place are on the pictures above. The rest of the place is just literally a big garden. But I must say, I did enjoy walking around the nature. It reminded me of my dear Alma Mater, UPLB.

I didn’t stay long as there were not really much to see. So I headed to my next (and sadly last) destination… Bumbungan Eco-Park.

Bumbungan Eco-Park

They said that the falls in this eco-park is man-made, so I wanted to see for myself.

  • From Japanese Garden, ride jeepney going back to Sta. Cruz.
  • Alight Cavinti Junction then ride a tricycle going to Bumbungan Eco Park. I contracted the driver to take me to the park then to jeepney terminal, which will pass by any terminals going back to Alabang. We agreed to P100.

At the eco-park entrance, I was politely asked by the caretaker of my agenda, and I said I’ll just take quick pictures of the place, then he bid me off with a smile.

33982274296_58b3d50e60_z

Don’t mind the labanderas and children swimming around. It’s perfectly legal to do that.

These are the fee system as of January 2017:

Environmental Protection Fee – Day: P10, Night: P20
Cottage – Day: P150, Night: P200
Life-vest rental – P10
Floater – P20

I was ready to pay the first fee, but it was waved (yay!) since I didn’t stay long. The caretaker even gave me a brochure about Cavinti Falls (aka Pagsanjan Falls), which I plan to visit some other time when I have more time.

Manong tricycle driver dropped me off to jeepney terminal, and off I went home.

I’d go back and sweep the rest of Cavinti’s spots, that’s for sure.

A Morning Devotion

Devotion.pngMore than two thousands years ago this very day, you went to Calvary to be crucified in my place Lord! I often wonder how can anyone love another person who is such a sinner and in spite all I have ever done you died in my place. My soul longs for you Lord Jesus to know you deeper in my own journey. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God, When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, Where is your God?  These things I remember as I pour out my soul. (Psalm 42:1-4)  As I continue to read from the book of Psalm that King David wrote I once again read these words from Psalm 56:3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. And Psalm 91:1-2 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty, I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.

Lord, on this day you went to the cross for all of mankind because of your love for us, but this was never the end. You rose from the dead in three days, that is the hope we have, for we put our hope and trust in you. You have conquered death and victory is yours Lord Jesus. We thank you for loving us and accepting us for who were are.

In Jesus Name Amen

Grace and Peace to you my friends

Belmore falls is in the Morton National Park. The walk provides a spectacular views of the Kangaroo valley and starts off at the Hindmarsh lookout. The track is a fenced off trail, which means that to start the unmarked trail, we had to jump off the fence. The climb is through the fallen trees and the slippery rocks. Note that few of the sections of the walk do come across confusing.

Date of publication: April 2017

Publication type: Journal article

In a nutshell: Falls are common among older adults and may be related to depressive symptoms (DS). With advancing age, there is an onset of chronic conditions, sensory impairments, and activity limitations that are associated with falls and with depressive disorders. Prior cross-sectional studies have observed significant associations between DS and subsequent falls as well as between fractures and subsequent clinical depression and DS. Using sophisticated methods and a large U.S. sample, this study found larger magnitudes of effect in the DS-falls relationship than in prior studies—highlighting the risk of falls for older adults with DS.

Created by huge and incredible rock formations near the shore can create this lagoon into a waterfalls through the massive waves that will hit. In case you’re wondering where can you find this place, well I am here to spill it to you.

In Laswitan, Cortes, Surigao Del Sur, there is a lagoon called Laswitan Lagoon. It is precious tourist destination that is cared by the people living there. You can enjoy more of the place if the weather isn’t good since there are huge waves.

taken-early-january

HOW TO GET THERE

You have to travel 3 km in a muddy and rocky road. So the means of transportation to get there is through motorcycle. After almost 45 minutes of travel, you will reach a path of staircase with 100 steps to reach the lagoon. Once you reached the lagoon, there is an entrance of 20 php or 0.403 $ which is very affordable.

The limestones in the lagoon has a height of 30-40 ft. If the weather is not good the height of the waves will be doubled based on the height of the limestones. It is already located in the Pacific Ocean. Laswitan Lagoon comes from the word “Laswit” which means massive splash. During October to December is a great time to go there to experience the massive splash which can give your body an exciting ache.

Based on a folklore, those limestones were used as a hiding place of our ancestor. According to one of the citizens there, Mang Abudansyo, the lagoon was a simple place where picnics and community gatherings were held until one traveler discovered it. Now, the Laswitan Lagoon is already a tourist spot and one of the best places to experience fun and thrill.

My goal is to explore all the hidden treasure and most popular tourist attractions at Bukidnon. Climb all the mountains, reach the far most part of the province, hike and trek all the trail available to explore falls and the beauty of the natural resources, our mother earth blessed my homeland. Since I wanted to go, see and experience all the adventure in my province. CEDAR, Center for Development and Recreation,  is in my bucket list.

A reforestation project of the local government and Department of Environment and Natural Resources ( DENR ),  another adventure spot in the province, and an eco-park covers a total land area of approximately 1,703 hectares featuring man-made and natural forests, cold springs, grasslands, rolling hills and natural waterfalls.

After a long time waiting to visit this eco-park adventure, atlast I am able to tell you the awesomeness of our mother nature and the effort of the locals to conserve, protect, and maintain the forest. The best part of this trip is that the entrance fee is just Php 10.00 only While other attractions are extremely increasing high prices nowadays, they still remain cheaper.

We had visited 4 falls;

Summer is definitely here and we’re all craving for the sun, sea and that summer fun. And while most people already enjoyed the glaring sun, some are still in search for that great beach escape. Well, worry no more guys coz’ Real Coast and Surf will definitely not disappoint you.

THINGS TO DO:
SURFING

I’m not a pro when it comes to surfing, and I’ve only been to one surfing site here in the Philippines so I have nothing to compare the waves to but in La Union. The Real waves are friendly for beginners with waves 2-4 feet high not far from the shore. During summer season, the beach is packed and it will be hard for surfers to ride waves given the possibility of hitting people along the beach. Surf boards though are limited, but not much guests go on surfing. Surf board rental costs Php 200/ hour and Php 500 if with instructor.

NATURE TREK TO WATERFALLS
There are two falls nearby which are Balagbag Falls and Nonok Falls. It’s just a 15-minute tricycle ride from the camp. Environmental fee for each falls costs Php 20. Not a fan of trekking? No worries! It’s just 10-15 minutes walk going to the falls. The water is refreshing on this summer heat.

SWIMMING
If you’re not seeking for any adventure and just want a day on the beach you will not be disappointed. The black sand beach of Real is so clean. You will have fun jumping on the waves so make sure to put on sunscreen. Expect the beach to be packed during the summer season, holidays, and weekends.

STAR GAZING
I think the stars are just simply amazing at the beach. You can see many stars that are really amazing. You can bring your binoculars for a better view or just simply adore the night sky on your bare eyes.

MUST KNOW’s

  • If you are a Globe subscriber, take time to buy a Smart sim card for there is no service for Globe subscribers on the place so you cannot access the internet nor even text. This place disconnects you to the world of social media.
  • There’s no wifi available on the Surf Camp so it is really perfect for bonding and soul searching. We were really able to talk about lots of stuff during our stay since it’s all we can do if not editing our photos.
  • Every night at 8 pm the staff let the guests have a Night Movie where they play a movie in the common area using the projector. (Just like the Drive In in Riverdale)
  • Sometimes, when there are many guests the staff prepares a bonfire for everybody. But, if there are not much you have to pay Php 300 for it.
  • Catch the Real sunrise, it is amazing!

HOW TO GET HOME
Getting there had been so easy for us since many blogs have given instructions on going there. However, we had a hard time on our travel back home. Here’s a travel guide for commuters like us.

  • From Real Coast and Surf, ride a tricycle going to the main road or the drop off point of the vans going to Infanta.
  • Once on the main road you can ride a van going to Pagsanjan, I suggest you get the contact number of the van driver who drop you off at Brgy. Malapad on your first day so you could just contact him to pick you up once you’re going home. In our case, all vans are full so we just took the jeepney going to Sinloan.
  • In Sinloan, we ride another jeepney going to Sta Cruz. You can tell the driver to drop you off at the terminal in Pagsanjan. Once in Pagsanjan you can ride either a van or bus going home. Just be specific to the driver as to where he should drop you since the terminals are quite far from each other.

I hope I’ve been helpful to you! Don’t forget to share your Real Surf experience!

Firbish Activity Weekend Part 3 // Scotland

CIMG2603aMake sure to check out my Previous Posts (Part 1, Part 2) about this weekend.

So the next day after our mountainous hike was a fun day to do these various activities. I had little interest in most of the activities so instead I went on a walk with one of the girls to the nearby town.

On our walk to the town we had to walk through this farm place (the road went through their property) and there were cows on the road. So here are some cow pictures.

CIMG2598a

Apparently the town we went to was called Killin and it was originally part of the land belonging to the Macnab clan.

CIMG2588aThere was also this beautiful old bridge which was built out of local stone in 1760.

CIMG2594a

And then of course there were the beautiful Falls of Dochart (which some translate to mean ‘Scourer of Evil’). Regardless of it’s supposed powers or historical significance, it was a really beautiful river/waterfall.

On the way back from the town we went back through the farm and decided to go into a field where these standing stones were. At the time we didn’t know that we were allowed to do this but apparently the farmer is super ok with it. Can we just take a moment and appreciate that I saw (and touched) some random standing stones that were in this farmer’s field!

And that was the morning of that day. The next post will cover the afternoon and then I think this weekend will be over. I hope you are enjoying it so far.

March 18, 2017. My boyfriend and I “climbed” Mt. Makiling up to the Mudsprings area (I forgot what station it was), and then we took a short tour in the Botanical Garden (though I was only fascinated by the falls and the taxidermed animals… and the bird calls). Here were pictures we took from the area. Enjoy!

DON'T JUDGE MAMA POSSUM

$
0
0

True story.  Living in the country with little adventurous boys has taught me many, many life lessons.  And there seems to be a spiritual lesson in the most unlikely and hilarious moments.

Several years ago my boys and their cousin came running into my house holding nasty, squeaky little naked possums.  They were beyond upset (the kids and the possums), the mother possum apparently was allowing the little helpless babies to fall out of the tree limb she was resting on.

I ran out into the woods to see, who wouldn’t be curious?  It was true.  In broad daylight, (aren’t possums nocturnal, I thought to myself?) this huge mother possum stood out on a narrow tree limb high above our heads.  Hanging precariously by their fingertips, from her stomach, were little tiny baby possums.  Dangling over the edge of the limb, and yes, plopping several feet down onto the ground!  One by one, these ugly but precious babies were falling to their death.  Or so we thought.

In a panic, we were scrambling to pick up the babies and running frantically to the house.  Obviously this mother was unfit to care for babies!!!  I don’t know what we thought we could do but I was determined she did not deserve custody any longer!

I called the TWRA, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (that is The Authority at our house, right after Jesus and the Bible, we all have TWRA Hotline programmed into our phone).  I realize that this was not a high priority to TWRA and wildlife officers, but who else could I turn to?  I had baby possums in my care and it looked like I would be raising them. HELP.

To speed up this story, let me say this.  I was laughed off the phone.  The game warden I spoke to, kindly, between bursts of laughter, informed me that baby possums bounce and more than likely the mother was teaching them to come when she called and how to climb trees. “You can’t kill a possum by dropping it.”  His exact words. Evidently this was a very important possum lesson.  I was told to put the babies back at the bottom of the tree and wait.

Chagrined and humiliated, we plodded back outside to the woods. Mama Possum remained on the limb, barely blinking at us through bleary eyes (she like all mothers of preschoolers looked eternally tired).  We carefully put the babies on the ground underneath her and stepped back.

She called them to her.  She made a rather unpleasant sound, to me anyway, and the babies began quickly scrambling through the underbrush climbing the closest limb or branch they could reach.  When we realized what they were trying to do, what she was trying to do for them, we couldn’t resist and directed them to HER tree.  (seriously some of them were clawing their way up the wrong bush or tree and it was too painful to watch)  We lingered and listened and watched as that mama possum taught her babies.

Thinking on this story for several years now, I can see in my mind clearly the patience she showed.  She sat on that limb for a long time, knowing the babies would eventually tire of holding on to her and drop to the ground.  They had to let go and drop and hit the ground so she could call them back to her. So they could learn to climb the tree, where safety lies.

I thought she was a bad, bad, awful mother.  But now with teenagers, driving cars and working and living life and making mistakes.  I want to be that mama possum.  Patiently waiting, calling them back to me, knowing the fall WILL hurt but WILL teach them how to climb higher and move toward safety.  If the mama possum didn’t go out on that limb, her babies would never let go, and they would live in that tree forever. If those possums didn’t let go, they would never learn to climb. If they never learned to climb, they would be at the mercy of predators on the ground.  Possums don’t have a lot of self defense techniques, even though they look and sound tough and confident, they are really a lot of hot air (kinda like teens and young adults sometimes).   They need to  hit the ground.  To learn to climb.  To listen to the voice of the Lord.  To live and to be safe.

I want my children to know their Savior’s call.  I want them to learn lessons under the watch of my husband and myself.  I want to be like that mother possum and let them fall sometimes, to learn but always call them back.  I so admire Mama Possum.

He tends his flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.”  Isaiah 40:11 (In this case I can now imagine Him gently leading, not just a mother sheep, but a possum and even me! Gently lead me Lord, thank you for gathering my children in your arms and carrying them close to your heart.  Amen
